Music Analyst Intern

Are you a band member, music student, DJ, record store clerk or self proclaimed musicologist?
Do you find yourself naturally deconstructing music as you listen to it?
Would you like to get paid and earn college credit while learning to be a music analyst?
Have you ever visited Soundflavor.com?

If your answer is "yes" to the questions above, then you could be the right person to join our high energy team. The Music Analyst Internship program is aimed at preparing you to be a permanent member of the Music Operations Team. As a Music Analyst Intern for Soundflavor, Inc., you will gain valuable digital music industry experience using our proprietary software to analyze music down to its most granular attributes. Your work will power the most advanced music recommendation system available today. This is a remarkable opportunity to be among the first employees at this rapidly growing company within a dramatically changing music industry. We are determined to revolutionize the way people discover and organize their music and we need you to help make that possible.

Requirements:

  • A broad, practical command of music theory. For example, the candidate needs to have a general understanding of modalities and how they contribute to consonance and dissonance, be able to identify time signatures, and possess a good understanding of terminologies such as "back beat."
  • The ability to recognize timbres at the instrument level (e.g., knowing what a clavinet, a sitar, a concertina, a Strat, and a viola sound like). A good understanding of production is also required (e.g., being able to hear the difference between a phaser and a flanger; understanding compression, dynamic range, etc.).
  • The ability to read and analyze lyrics written in English.
  • Broad knowledge of many different genres with a solid command of a few. No one is deeply fluent in every form of music, but breadth is critical to success.
  • Ability to think critically and analytically about music.
  • Experience using Microsoft Windows and Office.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Responsible and reliable.

Bonus points for:

  • Ethnomusicologists, with a deep cultural and stylistic understanding of a specific genre, or set of related genres, and their respective subgenres. An ethnomusicologist not only knows key names and dates, but understands the various intricacies that differentiate two very similar styles. Looking for ethnomusicologists in the following areas:
  • Latin Traditional
  • Latin Pop/Rock
  • Adult Contemporary
  • Country
  • World
  • Inspirational
  • Fluency in a second language.
  • Members of performing bands or solo artists.

Structure:

  • Four to eight-week internship (compliant with most college internship programs) with expense reimbursement and bonus pay possible upon completion of testing.
  • Opportunity for full/part time employment and stock option incentive program based on overall performance upon completion of internship.
